| Horses have held a position of importance to Man since Prehistoric time. Some of the earliest illustrations horses are in France at the Lascaux cave, whose paintings date from 18,000 to 17,000 years ago. Horses have symbolized mobility, strength and power since the earliest time and many cultures constructed legends and myths surrounding the Horse. In Celtic lore, horses are sacred to the Goddesses Epona and Rhiannon and symbolize energy, fertility, freedom and power. The Celtic horse goddess, Epona was worshiped as far as the Danube and into Rome. Her cult was adopted by the Roman army and they spread her worship wherever they went. She was the only Celtic Goddess to be honored by the Romans with a temple in their capital city. The Horse is one of the twelve animals associated with the Asian Zodiac. According to legend, thousands of years ago Buddha summoned all of the animals and honored those who came by naming a year for each of them.
