Throughout much of Egyptian history, silver was valued more highly than gold, due to its relative scarcity. Also, what are now considered semi-precious gems were quite rare and valuable in Ancient Egypt. Lapis lazuli, which held great spiritual significance for the Egyptians was not mined locally but imported primarily from what is now Afghanistan.

Although jewelry was commonly worn by all classes of the society, members of the elite class were the only ones to wear gold and silver bracelets, rings, and earrings. Ancient Egypt was a superstitious civilization and semi-precious stones with their different properties were incorporated into their jewelry.

Lapis is thought to promote wisdom and insight, to influence spiritual thinking and psychic abilities, and to enhance the inner self. When worn as an amulet, lapis is believed to enhance one's power, wisdom, and to ensure loving relationships.

Lapis lazuli is the traditional birthstone for December and the gemstone for the seventh and ninth wedding anniversary. It is the Planetary stone for Capricorn and the Zodiac stone for Libra.
