The image of the Tree of Life was an important motif in the mythology of nearly every culture. With its branches reaching into the sky and roots deep in the soil, it symbolizes the link between heaven and the Earth, uniting above and below.

The Celtic Tree of Life is one of the most popular designs in Celtic Art, found both on Celtic crosses and on illuminated manuscripts such as The Book of Kells. Britain was once covered by mighty oak forests, and tree reverence is a major feature within Celtic religion.

The most sacred tree of all was the Oak tree and the word Druid (the name of the Celtic Priest class) is compounded from the words for oak "dru" and wise "wid" - a Druid was one who was "Oak Wise." Druids built their teaching centers in the midst of Oak groves believing that trees were the ancestors of mankind, elder beings of wisdom who provided the alphabet, the calendar, and entrance to the realm of the Gods.
