Before the Christian era, the Shamrock was a sacred plant of the Druids in Ireland because its leaves formed a triad. St. Patrick has been connected to this plant because he is said to have used it to illustrate the existence of the Holy Trinity in his open air sermons. The continuous thread of the Celtic knot forming the Shamrock symbolizes the continuity of life.
