No one is certain where the distinctive circle of the Celtic cross came from or what it means, but the circle in the Celtic cross may have been a pagan moon or sun that was appropriated by early Christians to help convert the Celtic population. Its four arms were perfect for denoting the four elements, the four directions of the compass, and the four parts of man - mind, body, soul and heart. An Irish legend relates that St. Patrick created the first Celtic cross by drawing a circle over a Latin cross to incorporate the pagan moon goddess symbol.
