The ankh (pronounced "ahnk") was the Egyptian hieroglyphic character that stood for the word which means life. The original meaning of this Egyptian symbol is not known, but it has been suggested that it combines both the male and female symbols of Osiris (the cross) and Isis (the oval) and therefore signifies the union of heaven and earth.
Over time, the ankh came to symbolize life and immortality. It was believed that the life energy emanating from the Ankh can be absorbed by anyone in proximity to it and that the Ankh serves as conduit for the divine power of life that permeates the universe.
